2020 Elite Leadership IMPACT Award Recipient – John Couris

We are very excited to recognize John D. Couris, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tampa General Hospital, with a 2020 Elite Leadership IMPACT Award in healthcare.

John Couris with his IMPACT Award

John’s mission is to make Tampa General Hospital (TGH), a $1.5 billion nonprofit academic health system, the safest and most innovative academic health system in America. As a leader in the health care industry, John has achieved success through innovation, technological integration and strategic collaborations.

John connects with his people through observation and communication. He regularly shadows his staff, not in a suit, but in the uniform appropriate for the team he is shadowing. He has worked hours at a time in nursing, as well as cleaned floors and toilets and done rounds with residents and professors. He has also worked with phlebotomists, delivered meals and transported patients to keep in touch with his team by ‘walking in their shoes.’

He is also a firm believer in the power of communication as he regularly communicates with his team, the community and the healthcare industry through frequent social media posts and articles in a variety of publications.

Throughout his career, John has demonstrated a unique ability to lead organizations and empower individuals to reach their fullest potential while generating high levels of return on investment and developing innovative programs that consistently deliver on results.

Read the articles and watch the videos below to see how John practices his leadership. Thank you, John, for your impactful leadership in healthcare.

As we manage the challenges we will face today, tomorrow, and in the weeks ahead, we must remain focused, calm, and resilient. Most importantly, I encourage you to practice kindness, love, and understanding with one another. The true test of one’s character is how they manage through the hard times. When this is over and we have come out the other side, the way we treated each other is what we will remember and what truly matters.
