Why it’s a Path to Elite Level Leadership

People often ask me why it is a Path to Elite Level Leadership. I tell them, it’s a path because not everyone will travel it. Everyone will not become an Elite Level Leader. It’s like experiencing a:

  • Championship or MVP athlete
  • Award winning performer
  • World-renowned surgeon or economist
  • 5-star chef

Just as a journey may start on a 4-lane highway. It then narrows to a 2-lane road. Eventually, it it is reduced to a path as there are fewer and fewer travelers.

Meeting the Leadership G.O.A.T., Ken Blanchard

Honored to meet the leadership G.O.A.T. Ken Blanchard at the San Diego Leadership Forum Summit this morning. I read Ken’s first book, “The One Minute Manager” in 1982. He has since authored or co-authored 60 books, mostly on or related to leadership.

I wanted to meet Ken since I learned The Ken Blanchard Companies was based here in San Diego, but COVID hit and I waited to reach out to him. I got the chance to meet him this morning and am looking forward to further discussions and sharing my upcoming leadership book with him. Thanks for your great remarks during the summit. It’s something we all need to hear more of today.

Elite leadership is what separates great leaders from good ones. It’s the same thing that separates good athletes from elite athletes. Elite athletes focus on improving their craft by following a regular practice and improvement regimen. Elite athletes are the ones who win championships, most valuable player awards and/or Olympic medals. This approach to improvement is also followed by award winning TV and movie performers, musicians and vocalists, chefs and renowned artists.

The Leadership Lesson We Should All Learn From Olympic Champion Simone Biles

Those that have followed me or engaged in one of my leadership programs know that the leadership development process I created was originally based on the way elite athletes have trained for decades. In short, they assess their abilities, create a vision which they execute on, reflect on how they performed and receive regular coaching feedback.

I have had the pleasure of interviewing and researching several elite athletes over the years. This includes championship athletes from several sports and Olympic medalists. The one thing they have in common is their drive to compete at an elite level.

TYLER PERRY – 2020 ELITE LEADERSHIP IMPACT AWARD RECIPIENT

Tyler is a world-renowned producer, director, actor, screenwriter, playwright, author, songwriter, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He learned early on the value of reflecting in his life. After enduring a difficult childhood, he discovered the therapeutic benefits of journaling while watching an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. These painful reflections became the foundation for his first play, “I Know I’ve Been Changed,” which he wrote, produced, directed, starred in and rewrote until the show was opening to packed theaters and rave reviews.

Embracing journaling helped Tyler to better understand, unload and heal, but it is also used as a leadership tool to help leaders prepare for future challenges. When Tyler looks back at what he faced in the past, he is inspired and encouraged with his future. This understanding of his past is probably what drives his philanthropic work. Tyler has built a filmmaking empire as well as a humanitarian one.
