Why Some 30-Minute Appointments Seem Longer than Others, Chicago Booth Review, July 17, 2023. We incorporate time perceptions into our purchasing decisions every day: Should you save money by taking the subway or splurge and call a cab? Is that long airport layover worth it? Order delivery or cook at home? How much time will we spend on vacation? A key factor influencing many of these decisions is how many “temporal boundaries,” or delineations of minutes, hours, weeks, years, etc. are involved. Time periods that cross more boundaries feel longer, they find, and people behave accordingly.

How to Hire and Support More Women in Your Organization, MIT Sloan Management Review, July 27, 2023. For the first time in the history of the Fortune 500, women are leading 10% of the United States’ largest companies by revenue. The milestone is worth recognizing but can also serve as motivation to continue moving the dial when it comes to women’s representation in leadership positions.

We’re Now Finding Out the Damaging Results of the Mandated Return to the Office – and it’s Worse Than we Thought, Fortune, August 1, 2023. We’re now finding out the damaging consequences of the mandated return to office. And it’s not a pretty picture. One study found that nearly half (42%) of companies with return-to-office mandates witnessed a higher level of employee attrition than they had anticipated. And almost a third (29%) of companies enforcing office returns are struggling with recruitment. In other words, employers knew the mandates would cause some attrition, but they weren’t ready for the serious problems that would result.

20 Questions to Ask When Your Team’s Vibe Is Off, Harvard Business Review, July 17, 2023. Has your team lost sight of its purpose and the goals you’re working toward together? If so, it might be time for a team reset that focuses on realignment. Or, maybe your team just doesn’t feel like a team anymore? Maybe team members feel disconnected, invalidated, or frustrated, and even minor issues are creating friction? In that case, your reset must focus on revitalizing your team dynamic.
